Pattern Instructions

Making the Ornaments

Make 2 using your first color: Create a Magic Loop.

Round 1: Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet). Make 11 double crochets (dc) into the magic loop. Slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the starting chain 3 to join the round. Pull the magic loop tight to close it. Cut the yarn and fasten it off. (You should have a total of 12 double crochets.)

Round 2: Using your next color, join in any stitch from Round 1. Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet). Make 1 double crochet (dc) in the same stitch. In each stitch around, make 2 double crochets. Slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the starting chain 3 to join the round. Cut the yarn and fasten it off. (You should have a total of 24 double crochets.)

Round 3: Using your next color, join in the space between any of the sets of 2 double crochets (dc) from Round 2. Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet). Make 1 double crochet in the same space. Chain 1, then skip the next 2 stitches.

*In the next space, make 2 double crochets, chain 1, and skip 2 stitches; repeat from * around.

Slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the starting chain 3 to join the round. Cut the yarn and fasten it off. (You should have 24 double crochets and 12 chain-1 spaces.)

Round 4: Using your next color, join in the top of the first double crochet from any set of 2 double crochets in Round 3. Chain 1, then make 1 single crochet (sc) in the same stitch. Make 1 single crochet in the next stitch. Make 1 spike stitch in the chain-1 space by inserting your hook between the 2 double crochets from Round 2.

*Make 1 single crochet in the next 2 stitches, then 1 spike stitch; repeat from * 10 more times.

Slip stitch (sl st) to the first single crochet to join the round. Cut the yarn and fasten it off. (You should have 24 single crochets and 12 spike stitches.)

Rounds 5 – 7: Using your next color, join in any stitch. Chain 1, then make 1 single crochet (sc) in each stitch around. Slip stitch (sl st) to the first single crochet to join the round.

Weave in all the ends of your yarn. Your ball will start to curve a little after Round 5. If you’re using DK weight yarn, 1-2 rounds of single crochet might be enough. Check the piece against your Crocheted Christmas Ball Ornaments; it should fit with a little stretch.

Finishing

Once both sections of your crochet ball are finished, slide them onto your ball, ensuring the right sides are facing out.

Using a matching yarn color (or any color you like), sew the two sides together. Gently stretch the pieces over the ball as you sew, remembering to leave a little space for the hanging loop.
