I personally prefer to substitute the initial ch3 in each round with a chainless double crochet, but you can choose to use the traditional ch3 if you prefer.
Begin by making a ch4 and joining it with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch3 (counting as a double crochet), work 11 double crochets into the ring, then join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial ch3. (12 double crochets)
Round 1
Round 2: Join a new color in any space between the stitches. Ch3, work a double crochet in the same space, and then [work 2 double crochets in the next space], repeating this pattern all the way around. Finally, join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial ch3. (24 double crochets)
Round 2
Round 3: Join a new color in any space between groups of stitches, ch3, work 2 double crochets in the same space, [and then work 3 double crochets] in the next space. Continue this pattern around, and join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial ch3. (36 double crochets)
Round 3
Round 4: Join a new color in any space between groups of stitches, ch3, work 2 double crochets in the same space, then ch1. Next, [work 3 double crochets in the next space, ch1], repeating this pattern around. Finally, join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial ch3. (36 double crochets and 12 ch1 spaces)
Round 4
Round 5: Join a new color in any space, make a ch1 (which does not count as a stitch), work 2 single crochets in the same space, then single crochet in every stitch, and work 2 single crochets in every space. Finally, join with a slip stitch to the starting single crochet. (60 single crochets)
Round 5
After completing this round, fasten off your work and weave in the loose ends.
Feel free to experiment with color combinations, mixing and matching different hues to create a unique set of Granny Flower Coasters. You can also adjust the size of the coaster by using thicker or thinner yarn and a corresponding crochet hook.
