Instructions
Row 1
Work 1 sc in the second chain from the hook.
Skip 5 chains, work 9 dc into the next chain, skip 5 chains, work 1 sc into the next chain.
Repeat from * to * across the row.
Turn.
Row 2
Ch 3 (counts as the first dc).
Work 1 dc in each dc across the fan, making ch 1 between each double crochet.
When you reach the single crochet between the fans, work 1 sc.
Keep working across the row.
Turn.
Row 3
Ch 3.
In each ch-1 space from the previous row, work:
2 dc, ch 1 in each space.
Continue across the fan.
Work 1 sc between each fan.
Turn.
Row 4
Ch 3.
Work 1 dc into each stitch across the fan.
Maintain a chain-1 space between the groups to preserve the fan shape.
Work 1 sc between each fan.
Turn.
Row 5
Work 1 sc in the first space.
In each chain space around the fan, work:
(1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) in the same space.
Repeat across the entire fan to create the decorative picot-like edging shown in the chart.
Beginning the Next Fan Row
To create the following row of fans, begin each new fan in the space between two fans from the previous section.
Attach the yarn in the joining space and work another fan using the same construction.
Each new row of fans is offset from the previous one, producing the layered shell effect illustrated in the chart.
