Square Motif Pattern – A Timeless Crochet Classic

Written byadmin in

Crochet motifs have always been a favorite among crafters because of their versatility and charm. One of the most beloved is the square motif, a design that can be transformed into spreads, blankets, and even decorative home pieces. The Square Motif Pattern is especially delightful because it balances intricate stitches with a simple construction process, making it accessible to crocheters who love working with repeating blocks.

The beauty of this pattern lies in its adaptability. By joining multiple motifs, you can create single-size, double-size, or even larger spreads, depending on your needs. The tassel finishing gives it an elegant, vintage touch, turning every finished piece into an heirloom-worthy treasure. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing project or a bold statement piece for your home, this motif pattern will quickly become a favorite in your crochet collection.

Gauge and Size Options

Each block measures 7¼ inches square before blocking.

  • For a single size spread (about 70 x 105 inches), make 9 x 14 motifs.

  • For a double size spread (about 90 x 105 inches), make 12 x 14 motifs.

Square Motif Pattern

This modular approach allows you to adjust your project to any bed size simply by adding or removing motifs.

Square Motif Pattern (US Terms)

Motif – Starting at center:

  1. Ch 12, join with sl st.

  2. 1st rnd: Ch 11 (counts as tr and ch-7), tr where sl st was made, * tr in next 2 ch; in next ch make tr, ch 7, tr. Repeat from * 2 more times, tr in next 2 ch, sl st in 4th st of ch-11, sl st in next 4 ch of free ch-7. Turn.

  3. 2nd rnd: With wrong side of tr’s toward you, ch 1, sc (over sl sts) in back loop of next 4 ch, sc in back loop of each tr and ch around. Join and turn.

  4. 3rd rnd: Ch 11, tr in back loop of sl st and in back loop of each sc around, making (tr, ch 7, tr) in back loop of center sc of each 7-sc group at corners. Join with sl st to 4th st of ch-11, sl st in next 4 ch.

  5. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately 3 more times, then repeat 2nd rnd once more.

  6. 11th rnd: Ch 11, tr in back loop of sl st, tr in back of next 3 sc; now make a cross st as follows:

    • Thread over twice, insert hook in next st and draw loop through.

    • Thread over and draw through 2 loops.

    • Thread over, skip 2 sts, insert hook in back loop of next st and draw loop through.

    • (Thread over and draw through 2 loops) 4 times; ch 2, dc in center-point of cross (this completes cross st).

    • Tr in back loop of next 4 sts. Repeat from * 4 more times, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr. Continue around; join. Sl st in next 4 ch.

  7. 12th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd.

  8. 13th rnd: Ch 11, tr in back loop of sl st, tr in next 3 sts, *cross st over next 4 tr, 4 tr over next cross st. Repeat from * around, making corners as for 11th rnd. Join, sl st in next 4 ch.

  9. 14th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd.

  10. 15th rnd: Ch 10, tr in back loop of sl st, tr in back loop of next 3 sts, * pc st in back loop of next sc.

  • To make a pc st: ch 1, make 6 dc in same st, drop loop from hook, insert hook in ch-1 preceding the 6 dc and draw dropped loop through.

  • Tr in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around, making ch-6 instead of ch-7 at corners. Join and fasten off.

This completes one motif.
